“Survivor China”
Filed Under Uncategorized | Leave a Comment
When I first saw this I thought that it was a joke. I had always joked that our adoption trip to China was like the Amazing Race and Survivor all in one. We had the jetting around, food challenges and a brand new 12 month old child that was now our responsibility. To answer my question “Yes” this is for real. We had given up on Survivor a while back, but I guess we’ll be watching one more season. FYI – Jiangxi is the province where Morgan is from.

Did you read that this girl had a 3.5 GPA, took College Prep and Honors classes. Just another proud moment in the history of South Carolina. I FEAR for my daughters Education.

Can’t wait till October
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
On October 22nd 2007 Nick Jr has a new animated show called ‘Ni Hao, Kai-lan’ featuring a Chinese girl. As I understand it Kai-lan is kind of a Chinese Dora.
NI HAO, KAI-LAN is a play-along, think-along series starring Kai-lan Chow, a playful, adventurous preschooler with a big heart, who speaks both English and Mandarin. The series centers on Kai-lan and her relationships with her grandfather, YeYe, and her animal friends. YeYe plays a major role in her life as he gently and playfully guides her to her own discoveries. Kai-lan is a natural leader who is thoughtful and caring and has a gift for helping her friends when they really need her. Her best friends include: Rintoo, a rambunctious five-year-old tiger who loves to play, Tolee, a five-year-old koala, who always puts his friends first, Hoho, a three-year-old monkey full of boundless energy, and Lulu, a happy six-year-old pink rhino.
Morgan likes it. She even started to repeat the Mandarin words. To our suprise last night she also said some thing else that sounded like Mandarin. Very Cool.

Domestication (Part 3)
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
The 30 day were up and I was mad. I found a DHEC document on line GUIDELINES For Obtaining A Certificate of Foreign Birth: Domestication of Foreign Adoptions that probably would have helped but we didn’t find it until after we submitted the paperwork. I did see a phone number for DHEC Vital Records on the document and called. The lady on the other end was less than friendly and contradicted everything I was told when I droped off the documents. She was hung up on me paying $27 I told her that I had paid $12 already and I would gladly pay $200 to get this ordeal over with. The woman asked for my daughters name I said ”Morgan Creighton” then she asked for her given name “I said Fu Chuan Ke” and she still couldn’t find the paperwork then she asked for my street address and she found Morgan and I said “Yes that’s my daughter” then she acused me of not giving her that name. I told her Morgan Creighton is my daughter and she wanted to argue. I said that it didn’t matter Morgan was the right name and she launched into all this information was confidential and and it DOES matter bla bla bla. Finally she asked me who took the paperwork and given the description I was directed to Tracy the girl I gave the paperwork to. Tracy tells me that today was the 30th day and she was mailing out the letter to me today or I could pick it up. I told her I’ll be there to pick it up. When I got there it was just more stuff to do but it looks like we are almost at the end of the road.
If some one from SC DHEC reads this I welcome your comments because so far my experience with SC DHEC Vital Records has been a painful one.

Fashion advice from a 3.5 year old
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
Lately when I wake up in the morning, get dressed and wake Morgan up she likes to complement me on my shirt choice. She’ll say something like “I like that shirt Daddy” and my reply is typically a proud “Thank you Morgan”. I didn’t think that my child would become fashion conscious so soon I fear for the next 15 years, can I maintain and acceptable dress code so that my daughter won’t think I’m a Geek, Slob, or God forbid frighteningly Out of Date. Fortunately I have a fashion conscious wife that will help in this area so I can probably look forward to hearing things like “I like that shirt” a lot in the future from my daughter.

Help Morgan is Using the Force against me…
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
I have found that my Jedi Mind Control powers have been getting weaker. Morgan has grown powerful, she has. I’m finding it harder to put one over on her. She’s becoming sharper, more focused and seems to be ready for me to distract her. I can’t just use my power to change the subject or switch the cheap toy for the expensive one. The Force was Strong in me at one time and I used to have amazing control of Morgan now she’s become wise to my powers and has learned to resist them. Morgan has also started to use the Force against me. She’s only 3.5 what am I going to do.

“I want to watch boys fall down”
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
Last night Morgan was asking me ”I want to watch boys fall down”. While I was kind of worried about this request I finally realized what she wanted was to watch “Ninja Warrior”. Ninja Warrior is a show on the G4 channel where Japanese athletes run an obstacle course. It’s amazing what these guys can do. The best part is watching Morgan’s reaction, she really gets into it. She “Ooo’s” and “Ahh’s” and cringes with Becky and I as some of the contestants don’t make it through the course.
This is video of Makoto Nagano running the full course, this guy is amazing.

What does 福 “fu” mean
Filed Under Morgan | Leave a Comment
This Character is pronounced “fu” in Chinese. This character literally means good fortune, prosperity, blessed, happiness, and fulfillment.
In oracle bone carvings, the Chinese character fu looks like two hands placing a jar of wine onto an altar. The hands are offering wine to the Gods in the hope of obtaining blessing. Hence the meaning “blessing”.
One tradition from the Zhou Dynasty (beginning in 256 B.C.) holds that putting a fu symbol on your front door will keep the goddess of poverty away. The character “fu” is posted by virtually all Chinese people on the doors of their homes during the Spring Festival (closely associated with the Chinese New Years).
Usually written in black ink on red diamond-shaped paper, fu is affixed upside down. This is because the phrase “to turn upside down” dao4, is also a pun on the word “arrived” dao4. An upside down fu therefore means “Luck has arrived”.
